Wes 101: Week 2

Dear 2023,
I hope things are going well and you’ve all found courses that you’re excited to take this term.
Please know that the Drop/Add period ends tomorrow (September 13) at 5:00 p.m.
For courses in which you have the option to select a grading mode (whether A-F or CR/U), the deadline to do so is Friday, September 27.

Time Management: 5 Tips and Tricks

1. Be mindful of how you’re spending your time. Plan out your week using this calendar and then, after the week is over, go back and consider how well reality reflected the plan.

2. Know when things are due and plan ahead. I have some big calendars for the term available in my office with which you can sit down with your syllabi and put all of your deadlines in one place so that you see your term visually and then break things down from there. When sitting down to study/complete work, have a manageable list of goals in front of you.

3. Plan backwards and give yourself false deadlines for written assignments. For example, if a paper is due on a Friday, work to get a reasonable draft done by that Monday. This gives you a full week to have a writing tutor, friend, classmate or even the instructor read it over. The paper you turn in will be far more polished and well-considered than if you had waited until the last minute.

4. Break larger projects down to smaller tasks. A large project can be overwhelming, so break it down step by step so that it feels manageable to begin (and finish!).

5.. Schedule in self-care. Give yourself break times, moments to decompress, etc. Time management is often stress management, so make sure that you are following the rule of 7 and giving yourself time to sleep and eat well.

Meet Dr. Jennifer D’Andrea!

Dr. D’Andrea is a licensed clinical psychologist who has served as the director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) since June 2011. She earned her Ph.D. from Fordham University in 2003 and completed her postdoctoral specialization at Yale University Medical School. She also has a Master of Education from Boston College and a BA from College of the Holy Cross. Dr. D’Andrea focused her clinical training in the treatment of serious mental illness, the early detection and prevention of psychotic spectrum disorders, and the cognitive-behavioral treatment of borderline personality disorder. Following completion of her postdoctoral training, she served as the clinical director of a residential treatment facility for adolescent girls, and she spent several years working in a child and adolescent psychiatric hospital in both direct clinical and management capacities. In these arenas, her areas of clinical concentration have included psychotherapy with GLBTQ adolescents and survivors of chronic trauma. At Wesleyan CAPS, Dr. D’Andrea initiated and leads the WESupport workshop series and student group, which prepares students to be peer mental health advocates. When not at CAPS, Dr. D’Andrea enjoys rollerskating with her twin daughters, reading fiction, gardening, and hiking in the national parks.

That’s it for this week; please continue to be in touch!
Best,
Dean Wood
